师:Spring Festival, Chun Jie, is the first day of the Chinese lunar calendar. When Chun Jie is approaching, people are busy purchasing goods, cleaning the house, cooking traditional food, making Spring Festival couplets, and hanging Spring Festival pictures. Having a family dinner is the main activity on New Year's Eve. Dumplings are essential for the dinner. Dumplings represent reunion and good will. The whole family gathers to enjoy quality family time. On Lunar New Year's Day, people put on new clothes, visit each other, and give money to kids to send good wishes. During the Spring Festival holidays, all kinds of celebrations are held, including temple fairs, performances, and lantern exhibitions, which last nearly half a month. Alright, after watching the video, what words related to Spring Festival come to your mind?

生:Spring Festival means the beginning of a New Year. It's the biggest festival in China. It's a day for family reunion, fireworks, reading couplets, and so on.

师:Well, that's right. Spring Festival always evokes our best memories. Can you tell me how you and your family celebrate Spring Festival?

生:Making dumplings, putting up decorations, getting together, letting off fireworks, and usually having a family gathering.

师:Yes, activities and customs may vary in different places. Now, let's move on to read three readers' accounts. To learn more about Spring Festival, please turn to pages 52 and 53. Tell me, who are the three readers?

生:They are Tom Jenkins, Xu Gang, and Li Ye.

师:Can you write their brief introductions and predict where they would spend their Spring Festival? What about Tom Jenkins?

生:Tom might spend the Spring Festival in Nanjing, perhaps at his parents' home. And Li Yan might be at home in Heilongjiang.

师:Excellent prediction. And can you predict what the three accounts are about? Let's start with Tom Jenkins. Since Tom is an exchange student from another country, he'll probably write about his first experience of Spring Festival, perhaps with his host family. Xu Gang is a computer engineer working in Shanghai. He might not be a local, so he'll probably go back home every Spring Festival to celebrate it with his family. And Li Yan is a grandma, so she's probably retired and every year she waits for her children and grandchildren to come back home and celebrate Spring Festival together.

Now, let's check whether our predictions are right or wrong. Please read the three accounts and use a few words to show what Spring Festival means for each account. Tips: Scan for the description of Spring Festival, focusing on the first and last sentence of each paragraph.

师:After scanning the first account, we know it was Tom's first time spending Spring Festival in China. So for Tom, Spring Festival means excitement and a lot of fun. For Xu Gang, coming home and being with his entire family is the most important part of Spring Festival. And for Li Yan, Spring Festival is family time.

Now, read the three accounts and find out each person's experience of Spring Festival from the perspective of the timeline and activities. This time, we'll divide into groups. Each group will read only one account. After reading, you can share your information and understanding. Then, you'll classify your information according to the table. After filling the table, you'll have a better understanding of the text structure. Three columns: When, With Whom, Preparations before Spring Festival, Activities during Spring Festival. For Tom, preparations began a week before Spring Festival. They cleaned the house and attached “fu” upside - down to the front door. During Spring Festival, they set off and watched fireworks and enjoyed the big dinner. For Xu Gang, he celebrated Spring Festival at his parents' home. Weeks before Spring Festival, he booked travel tickets and chose gifts for his parents. During Spring Festival, he chatted with his friends and parents and had hot pot together. And for Li Yan, she got ready for the children's coming back, bought a lot of things, and prepared dishes. During Spring Festival, children were running, shouting, and playing, and adults were talking and making dumplings together.
