  生:She may middle school.

师:Got it. When I look at the pictures of your school, I'm quite amazed by the campus. If you think the buildings in your schools are great, please slap the table and make some noise here. Got it?

  生:(拍桌子制造声响)

师:Thank you very much. Today's topic is about great buildings, and we're going to embark on a tour of great buildings at home and abroad through viewing, listening, and speaking. Are you ready for this?

  生:Ready.

师:Now let's start. I'd like you to match the buildings in the photos or on your handout. Everyone, please look at the first page of your handout. What you need to do is match the buildings and photos with their names. You can use your common knowledge and make your decision within 20 seconds. Go.

  (20秒后)

师:That's finished. Now let's check our answers. For picture 1, what is that?

生:A what is a? The Palace of the Dogers.

师:Good. Read after me. Palace of the Dogers. Good. And what about the second one? A castle, right? So what is its name?

  生:Alien Donun Kazzo.

师:Great. It's in Scotland. And about picture 3, it's the Rivers Chrysler Building. What about the last one?

  生:Post Office Savings Bank.

师:Okay, so we have four pictures of four great buildings here. Among these four, which one do you like best? Please, can you tell me which building you like best?

  生:Palace of the daughters.

  师:Why?

生:Because it's very famous. I've heard of it before.

师:Thank you very much. And what about your partner?

生:I like the Palace of the daughters, too.

  师:So what's the reason?

  生:It's ancient.

师:Yes, its style is ancient, not very modern. Right. Thank you very much. For me, I like the second one the most, the Alien DWN and castle. Anyone here with the same idea as me? The Alien Donin castle. Please put up your hand. Nobody? Girls, do you think the castle is quite romantic? The prince and princess live there and it looks like something from a fairy tale, right? To help us learn how to describe a building in English, we're going to listen to someone describing the Alien Donin Castle. Okay, everyone please look at the handout for Task 2. We're going to listen to the tape and what you need to do is fill in the blanks here. Got it? Are you ready?

师:My favorite building is in Scotland. It's an amazing castle called Eileen Donen. Have you heard of it? No, I don't think so. Well, it's on a loch, you know, a kind of lake. When you get near it, it looks as if it's in the water. It really looks like something from a fairy tale because it's located on a small island and it has a big tower. When you walk across the bridge to the island, you can see the castle in front of you. It looks really strong because it's made of a type of stone, you know, gray granite. That's right. And anyway, when you get inside, it's sort of strange and you can look out and see the loch around the castle and the sea. It's really beautiful.

师:So, does he like it? Can you tell me the answers for the blanks here? What about you? Can you tell me the location of this castle? Spain or Scotland?

  生:Scotland.

师:Thank you very much. And what about your partner, to be more exact? Where is it located?

  生:It's located on a loch.

师:On a loch, right? Thank you very much. It's located on a loch. And what about the material? What is it made of? What about you?

生:It's made of rough stone, granite.

师:Thank you so much. Granite. For the other students, do you know the word granite?

  生:Yeah.

师:Good one. And what about the feature here? Anything special about this building? Any special part of it? Can you give me the microphone? Yes. Did you find any special part of this castle?

  生:It has a big tower.

师:Thank you very much. A castle with a big tower looks like something from a fairy tale. You got it. Thank you very much. Very romantic. The prince and princess probably lived in the tower, right? That's all for the first listening. Now let's listen to the tape again. This time, you are going to underline the phrases, the useful expressions in the script. Got it? So listen again and underline the phrases.

  (再次播放录音)

师:Again. So what phrases have you got? We start from you. Just tell me one phrase you have underlined. Okay? One phrase that's really useful in your own writing or speaking. Any idea?

  生:No.

师:So let the other students tell you what they've got.

  生:a kind of.

师:Thank you. What about you? Any phrases you've underlined? Share with us one phrase only.

  生:a type of.

师:a kind of, a type of, a sort of, they're very similar, right? Thank you very much. And what about you? What phrase have you got?

  生:looks as if it is.

师:looks as if plus a sentence. Right. Great phrase. Thank you very much. And what about your partner? The last one.

生:It really looks like something from.

师:look like something. Thank you very much. So we've got a lot of phrases here. But have you thought about classifying them based on their functions? Here are phrases I've underlined. Let me try to classify them. When we talk about materials, what phrase do we use?

  生:be made of.

师:Good. When talking about location, what phrase have we used?

  生:be located on.

师:Yes, thank you. And there are two phrases the boy mentioned, look like something and look as if plus a sentence. We use these two phrases when we want to compare something. Okay, so try to classify the expressions based on their functions or your own understanding. Okay, and I've got other very special words here. Look at the words in yellow. Are you familiar with them? Just now the boy used “you know”, “and again”, “and anyway”, right? Those are phrases which are very common in our oral English, and also in Chinese, right? So when will we use these phrases?

生:When we have no idea what to say.

师:Just like the first boy, when you have no idea what you're going to share with us. So you can use “you know”, “anyway”, right? Those are filler words. They are very common in our spoken English. When you hesitate, when you have no idea what you're going to talk about. But I suggest you should avoid them after practice. Okay, so avoid filler words in your spoken English. You are very fluent in your English, believe that. Okay, so much for the Alien Donin Castle. Now let's move on to the other three buildings. We have the Chrysler Building, the Palace of the Doges, and the Post Office Savings Bank. Let's go on a tour with the application called Google Earth. Have you heard of it?
