师:Hello everyone, welcome to my class. In the previous part of this unit, we've talked about humans and nature. Today, we'll continue this topic. First, you'll read a story and identify its main elements: characters, time, events, and effects. Second, read to gather the storyline and the characters' feelings. Third, retell the main plot based on your mind map. Then, analyze why the fisherman survived and conclude some disaster - survival measures. First, I have a question for you. Do you know any stories about people and the sea?

生:Yes, good. The Old Man and the Sea. Maybe some of us know 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

师:Today, we'll learn a story about people and the sea. Before that, let's get to know some facts about it. Now, please read the fact file and answer the question: What is a Moscan Strom?

生:A Moscan Strom is a system of tidal whirpools, which is one of the strongest in the world.

师:Good. Let me show you a picture of it. Look, here is a Moscan Strom. It's huge and strong. It can pull things down into it. Here is the edge of the whirpool. Here is the inside of the whirpool. The very center is the bottom of the whirpool. When a boat meets the Moscan Strom, it would move from the edge to the inside and finally to the bottom. So we can describe the Moscan Strom as strong and powerful. Now please look at the three pictures. What do you see? You can use the words and phrases below to describe them.

生:In the first picture, we can see a boat trapped in a whirlpool with a man struggling inside. In the second picture, we can see a fishing boat almost turned over by huge and wild waves, and the fishermen are trying to survive the storm. In the third picture, we can see a peaceful sea with a clear sky and a shining moon. The man is picked up by a boat.

师:Now, based on the fact and the three pictures, can you predict what will happen in the story?

生:It's probably about a fisherman's experience of meeting the Moscan Strom.

师:Okay, good. Now please skim the story and answer the following questions. First, who are the main characters in the story? Second, who is telling the story? Third, when and where did the story happen? Last, what effect did the terrible experience have on the storyteller? Have you finished?

生:The main characters are the fishermen and his two brothers. The fisherman is telling the story. The story happened about three years ago in the sea. The terrible experience broke his body and soul. It took less than a single day to change his hair from black to white.

师:We may wonder what happened exactly to their boat. What did they do? So now, please read again. Find the answers to the questions: First, what happened to their boat and how did they react? Second, what were the storyteller's feelings?

生:A huge wave covered their boat. The younger brother fell into the sea. The elder brother put his mouth close to the storyteller's ear and cried out, “Moscan Strom.” He felt frightened. Then, with the wind and waves, the boat was going in the direction of the whirpool. They were hopeless. The storyteller felt sick, as if he was falling from a mountaintop in a dream. Then they went round and round, getting closer to the horrible edge of the whirpool. However, the storyteller's feelings changed. He began to think how amazing it was to die in such a way and began to appreciate the beauty of nature. At this moment, he felt calmer. Suddenly, they went over the edge of the whirpool. They thought their life was over, but they were still alive and safe. So the storyteller felt kind of relieved. Now they move from the edge to the inside of the whirpool.
