师:Hello, everyone. Welcome to the English class on the air. I'm so glad to meet you here. I'm Wu Yue from Beijing Chaoyang Foreign Language School. Now we are going to study the writing workshop of Unit 4. I hope you'll have a wonderful time here. Let's get started. By the end of the class, you'll be able to clarify the structure and features of an online personal profile, master practical skills in personal profile writing, and finally, write a captivating online personal profile before the English journey.
I do hope you can read the actual reading named “Why We Love the Book” on your handout. It's a preface of a classic book, which can definitely help you broaden your thoughts and build your vocabulary when you need to recommend books. Hope you'll perform better in the lesson. At the very beginning, I want to show you a very exciting announcement.
Good news. Citibook Club and City Movie Club are recruiting new members. You're going to write a personal profile to join one of the clubs.
Do you feel excited? I've already sent you the online personal profile. Hope after the lesson you can write a unique and captivating profile. All of you can stand out in the selection. First, let's get an overview and look through all the information on the personal profile. At the first part of the profile, what personal information do you need to fill in? Aaron Flees.
生:And my name, my age, my location, and my introduction, and the favorite type of broken movies. And we recently join the club and no more.
师:Oh, super. Clearly, all the items are laid out one after another. It not only contains basic information but also two proper writings that can definitely show our strengths and characteristics.
Please look at the last line online for your safety and protection. Please click here for our privacy policy. Why should we read the privacy policy when filling out information online? Charlie, what's your understanding?
生:Our own information, biological information or personal information might be stolen by other people who will use it for illegal things.
师:Oh, smart boy, you've got the point. When we surf the internet or use it for work and daily life, we should carefully protect our personal information and pay attention to internet security.
So here's the tip. Don't give too much personal information online. And if possible, try to use a virtual name. For example, you can use names like Taylor Swift, LeBron James, or even a food name, like Strawberry Hamburger and so on.
It happened that one of your mates, Happy Hermani, was to join the book club. You can read hers in the book after learning her version. I hope you can do a better job on your own personal profile.
It's time for us to focus on the first paragraph, the “Writing about Me” part. What can we write here? You have 2 minutes to read and try to answer what aspects are mentioned in the “About Me” part. Time's up. Have you found the answer after reading? I suppose we can easily find it.
生:The writer talks about her subjects and hobby. She likes English, enjoys history and geography. In her spare time, she likes to read because reading is another way of exploring the unknown world.
师:So why does she mainly talk about her subjects and hobby? Why not talk about her favorite food or sports? Because she wants to join the book club. Carefully choosing relevant points can help her achieve her goal.
The writing purpose here is the tip. When filling in any kinds of application forms, please keep in mind the practical principle and try to meet your writing purpose. Now it's time for us to focus on the second paragraph, the “Food, Book, or Movie” section. Usually, we can interpret this item as “My Favorite Book or Movie”. And why? This is really like a paragraph writing in the college entrance examination. So we can follow the typical writing principles to produce a logical and ideal paragraph. When we talk about paragraph writing, we should analyze it from the following aspects. First is the structure, which should follow the classic pattern: topic sentence plus one or two supporting details.
What is the keyword in the question? It is certainly “your favorite book or movie”, which helps us share our opinion on this topic. And what tense should we use, present or past? Definitely present tense. Last but not least, we should introduce our own favorite book or movie.
