师:Good afternoon, boys and girls. Sit down, please. Do you like the video just now?
生:No.
师:No? Why? Can anybody tell me? I don't like it. Do you want to know why? You can say it’s bad. Everyone wants good and wonderful things. But sometimes, life is full of the unexpected. Read after me: unexpected.
生:unexpected
师:Today, we are going to learn Unit Twelve: Life Is Full of the Unexpected. Does anybody know the Chinese meaning of “unexpected”? You can guess.
生:不可预测的事情
师:You’re so clever. Right! Okay, let’s give him a big hand. Now, we can’t always expect everything. We are going to read a passage about this. There’s a paper on your desk. Before we read it, you’ve learned some reading strategies. Read after me: strategies.
生:strategies
师:They are prediction, skimming, and scanning. What is prediction? Do you know? Prediction means getting the main idea by reading the title, the picture, and the questions. Skimming means reading very fast to get the general idea. Scanning means reading slowly to get the main details. Are you clear? Are you ready to start?
师:Now, let’s come to the first part: prediction. Look at your paper. You have a title. Let’s read it: Life Is Full of the Unexpected.
生:Life Is Full of the Unexpected.
师:You can also see a picture and some questions. Can you read the questions together?
生:Which two events does the writer mention? How did the writer end up missing the events?
师:Let’s learn some new words. Read after me: event.
生:event
师:Event means “事件”. And there’s a phrase: finish doing something. “Missing” here in this context has its relevant meaning. Now, discuss with your partner. Try to make a prediction and tell me what this passage is about. Clear? Now, go!
(学生讨论)
师:Does anybody want to share your idea? Good, you please.
生:I think something happened in the city.
师:Is it good or bad?
生:Bad.
师:Any different ideas? Do you have more ideas? When you make a prediction, you can find clues from the title, the picture, and the questions. The title is Life Is Full of the Unexpected. So, maybe it’s about something unexpected. Look at the picture. Maybe some bad things are going to happen. There’s a lot of smoke, so maybe there’s some damage. From the questions, we know it should be about some events, bad and unexpected ones. Clear?
生:Clear.
师:Do you want to know what happened?
生:Yes.
师:Very good. Now, let’s come to our passage. Look at the picture and tell me what happened.
生:描述各异后定位正确信息
师:Read after me: Paris, Paris attack.
生:Paris, Paris attack.
师:Do you know this event?
生:Yes.
师:It happened a week before. Do you like it?
生:No.
师:But you have to know about it. You also need to know when and where it happened. Remember?
生:Yes.
师:Who can answer me? When did it happen?
生尝试回答但有错误
师:I’ll tell you. It was on November 13th, Black Friday. And where?
生:Paris.
师:Good. When talking about an event, pay attention to when and where. Let’s come to number two. Tell me what happened, when, and where. Clear? Go!
(学生交流信息)
师:OK, are you ready? Now, what happened? I want to see your hands. How about you?
生:Typhoon.
师:Yes. There was a typhoon. When?
生:October the fourth.
师:Yes. October the fourth. And where?
生:Zhangjiang.
师:So, is it a good event or a bad event?
生:Bad.
师:Do you want to see more?
生:No.
师:Okay, let’s come to the next one. Is it good or bad?
生:Still bad.
师:This time, can anybody tell me what happened, when, and where? You may find the answer from the passage. Look, let’s come to Paragraph One. Skim Paragraph One and fill in the form. Then tell me when, where, and what. Understand? Just skim the passage. I’ll give you 35 seconds. Are you ready?
