师:Good afternoon, everyone.
生:Good afternoon.
师:Today we'll continue reading the book *Gulliver's Travels*. You have finished reading Chapters 6, 7, and 8. Last weekend, I asked each group to do a project: to design a game to show Gulliver's adventures in the new country. Right? I think every group did a very good job. Group 5 gave me a very deep impression. Do you want to enjoy their game?
生:Yes.
师:Okay, let's welcome the leader of Group 5 to introduce the rules of the game to all of us.
小组5组长:Hello, everyone. Now let me tell you the rules of our game. Suppose you're Gulliver and you are going to pass the eight barriers in our game. The barriers are the dangerous situations in Chapters 6, 7, and 8. Here are our rules:
1. Choose your favorite number. Each number stands for a danger Gulliver meets.
2. Describe the situation, tell your choice and the reason.
3. Put the pictures in the correct order and retell the story. Now, let's start. Who'd like to try the game first?
生A:Well, I'd like to choose No. 8.
小组5组长:Please describe this picture.
生A:I'm Gulliver now, and I met the terrible storm.
小组5组长:What is your choice?
生A:I'd like to choose No. 2, because waiting until the storm stops is the best way for me. If I jump into the sea, it's too dangerous for me and I can't swim well in such a terrible environment.
小组5组长:You survive. Congratulations. Now let's continue. Who would like to try?
生B:I'd like to try No. 2.
小组5组长:Please describe this picture.
生B:After I went to the palace, the king asked me about my country's government. I told him the truth, but he showed no respect and laughed at me.
小组5组长:What is your choice?
生B:I'll try to make the king agree with me because the king is greater and bigger than me. So if I keep arguing with him, he will be angry and might kill me. So I choose No. 2.
小组5组长:You make it. Congratulations. Now let's continue. Who would like to try the game next?
生C:I'd like to choose No. 6.
小组5组长:Okay, please describe this picture.
生C:This time, a big giant walked to me. I'm very scared.
小组5组长:What is your choice?
生C:I think No. 1 is not a good choice because the giant is very big and I can't win. So I choose No. 2.
小组5组长:You are alive. Congratulations.
小组5组长:Okay, now for these pictures we described just now, who would like to put these pictures in the correct order and tell the story?
生D:Okay, this is number 2. And this is number 6, and this is 1, 7, and the last one. So I'm going to tell the story now. First, soon after Gulliver came back from Lilliput, he looked for another job as a ship stopped there for an adventure. They were in the Indian Ocean when they had some terrible storms. Their ship ran completely off - course and they had no fresh water when the storm stopped. So the captain sent some men to look for some water on the island. When Gulliver came back, he found that there were no men and no boats. Instead, there was a giant chasing the men into the sea. He was very afraid and ran in the opposite direction, but the giant caught him and put him in his handkerchief. Then he carried Gulliver home. At the giant's home, Gulliver met another danger. First, the giant's cat tried to eat him, so he finally managed to escape. Then a big rat tried to attack him. He fought back with his sword. After that, the farmer realized he could make a lot of money from Gulliver. So he made Gulliver do 12 shows a day. Gulliver was very exhausted and got a bit ill. Then the queen bought Gulliver. She loves him. Gulliver was very sad to leave Glumdalclitch, the farmer's daughter, but the queen said that Glumdalclitch could stay with Gulliver, so he was happy again. Then one day Gulliver was having a conversation with the king. The king thought Gulliver's country and its government were very silly. So Gulliver felt very offended. But in the end, the king agreed with Gulliver that size and appearance did not matter. So Gulliver was happy again. So that's all.
师:From the previous story, we know that Gulliver is a person who likes traveling so much. Do you agree with me?
生:Yes.
师:I think he was a traveler by nature. How do I know this? Because on page 27 it says, “But I'm a traveler by nature. And after two months, I looked for another job as a ship stopped.” So class, what do you think of Gulliver? What kind of person do you think he was? Please go over the book once again and try to find some words to describe Gulliver. You can use this sentence pattern: I think Gulliver was... because on page... it says... From this, I know that... Is that clear? Okay, go through the book and share your ideas.
生E:Well, I think Gulliver was negative.
师:A negative person? What do you mean by this?
生E:Because on page 28, it says, “So this is my destiny. This is the end.” From this, I know that he didn't face difficulties with an optimistic attitude.
师:Oh, he's not so optimistic. You mean that he is a little bit passive, right? Yes, you persuade me. I didn't think of it before. Good point.
生F:I think Gulliver was very clever because on page 25, he answered in a language I didn't understand. And on page 13, it shows that he could learn a new language in such a short time.
师:I quite agree with you. He is, maybe he is a genius at language, right? Okay, thank you. Sit down, please.
生G:I think Gulliver was very patriotic.
师:Okay, can you spell this word?
生G:Yes. P - A - T - R - I - O - T - I - C.
师:Maybe for most of you, it is a new word. Can you explain this word for all of us?
生G:It means that a person who loves his country very much.
师:Got it. Because on page 34, it says, “I felt very offended at first and also quite angry as the king showed no respect for my country.” From this, I know that Gulliver loved his country very much. If someone says something bad about your country, what will you do? Just like Gulliver. I think we should do the same, right? Thank you.
生H:I think Gulliver was very considerate.
师:Considerate? You mean yes?
生H:Because on page 27 it says that “I left my wife and children in a nice new house and enough money for them to live comfortably.” From this, I know that he's quite considerate.
师:You must be such a considerate girl like him. What's your point, Hong Haoyan?
生I:I think he is a fearless person.
师:A fearless person. How do you know that?
生I:His love for traveling shows that this guy probably knew he might die, but he still travels so often. That means he's very...
师:What's another word for fearless?
生I:Brave.
生J:Well, I don't think Gulliver was considerate.
师:You don't think he was very considerate? You don't agree with Student H, right?
生J:Although he left enough money for his family, he didn't spend enough time with them. He always left his home. He never stayed with his family for a long time. He was not so responsible.
