师:Hello everyone, I'm Wu Shi Ting from Shiguang Middle School. Today, we'll learn Unit 7 Careers Lesson 3 “Meets the New Boss”. By the end of the lesson, you will be able to identify the changes in career and the preparations needed, analyze the text features of argumentation, draw a mind map of the text and retell it, compare different titles, express your opinion on a text, discuss how to prepare for career changes as a student, raise the awareness of lifelong learning, and build a positive career attitude. In the previous lessons, you've learned about some jobs and career skills and wrote your career plan. Now let's see a student's career plan together.
“At this point, I have no idea what I want to do in 10 years' time. But there is a prospect that I will follow in my parents' footsteps and work in the bank.
Compared with other occupations, being a bank teller is not that challenging. You can earn a decent salary and build a career as long as you finish what you're asked to do. To prepare for the job, I may choose a major relevant to finance at the university.”
Here, what does “prospect” mean? Yes, it means “possibility”. How about “relevant”? Yes, it means “related”. So, is his career plan practical? Is it possible for him to carry out his career plan in the future? Think about it. Oh, some of you might think it's possible for him to carry out his career plan because, working in the same field, his parents might give him some guidance and support. And some of you might think it's not practical because technology is changing so fast and this occupation might be replaced by AI, artificial intelligence.
Well, different people have different opinions. Will the jobs now be the same as jobs in the future? If not, how can we deal with the changes? That's what we are going to find out in today's lesson.
First, please look at the title and the pictures. Predict what might be talked about in a passage. Picture 1 shows an old worker teaching a young one. Picture 2 shows a machine hand sorting goods. And the title is “Meet the New Boss”.
Which of the following do you think might be talked about in the passage? You must have your own answers. Now let's read the text quickly. In three minutes, check your prediction and summarize the main idea. Okay, have you got it? Yes. It's about how jobs and occupations will change and how to adapt to the new job trends. Can you tell me the main idea of the passage? Yes, the features of career are changing. And faced with these changes, we should make some preparations.
This is the writer's opinion on future job trends, right? So, what is the type of writing? Yes, it's an argumentation, which means the writing purpose is to convince readers of the writer's opinion on job trends.
Then, what exactly are the changes and preparations? How does the writer convince the readers? Let's take a closer look. Please read paragraph 1 and find out the features of career in the past and the present. In the past, oh, you are very smart to notice the time indicators. Up until the 1980s, people followed in their parents' footsteps. And in your grandparents' time, there was a prospect of doing the same job from graduation until retirement.
How about now? How, times have changed. People have no intention of doing so. Look at the chart. How does the writer lead into the topic in this paragraph? Exactly. By showing the contrast between past and present, the writer leads to the topic that jobs are changing.
In this paragraph, two situations are listed. You'd follow your father to work on the farm or into the workshop. You'd follow your mother into the kitchen or sewing room. Why were these two situations listed? Great. They are examples showing people following their parents' footsteps. And examples are used here to make the writer's claim more convincing. How about other changes? Let's read paragraphs 2 to 4 to find out the features of careers in the future and fill in the blanks. While reading, please pay attention to some discourse markers. They will help you locate the answers quickly. Alright, how about the first wrong assumption? Yes, working in the same field or industry for an entire working life. And the reason is technology will change, so your skills are unlikely to remain relevant or enough. And people have to look beyond the so - called “little box” of career here.
What does the writer mean by saying “look beyond the little box called career”? It means you have to change the way you think about career and keep up with the development of technology. In this part, when talking about the preparations, the writer raised four questions in a row. “And then what will you do? Work hard, win a lottery? Hope for the best? You might be lucky.” What do these questions have in common? Can I solve the problem? Of course not. The real solution is to look beyond the career box, right? So, the writing technique used here is called irony. What is irony? Yes, it is the use of words that say the opposite of what you really mean, often as a joke and with a tone of voice that shows it. Why is irony used here? Great. The writer is trying to show that he or she is not serious and wants to draw the reader's attention.
